How long do itouches last

But is the new iPod still a worthy music player like its predecessor? We spent a bit of time getting to grips with the touch to find out. That's according to MacRumors contributor SteveMoser and tipster AppleLe on Twitter, although they're keen to label this as a 'rumor' rather than a 'leak' — so it sounds like it's something that's been heard in passing from inside sources, rather than something there is hard evidence for. There are a couple of reasons we're inclined to believe it: number one, Apple's recent announcement of a lossless upgrade for Apple Music, and number two, it's the 20th anniversary of the original iPod this year.

The new iPod touch 7th generation is available to buy now, with the price varying depending on how much storage you opt for.

In terms of design, the new iPod touch looks identical to its predecessor, with a four-inch display and a sleek, lightweight build. We tested the blue version, but the music and video player is also available in space gray, white, gold, pink, and red. There are also front- and rear-facing cameras — more on those later. The bottom edge of the iPod touch houses a built-in speaker, Lightning port, and, puzzlingly, a 3.

Reunited with the 3. True wireless earbuds , Bluetooth earbuds , and wireless headphones are getting better all the time, and there are plenty of Lightning-enabled cans on the market if you still prefer a wired connection. It even still has a headphone jack! And while the massive bezels and poor cameras certainly give it a dated feel, the processor is still snappy enough especially with the speed improvements from iOS 12 that it holds up just fine for everyday use.

That new chip also enables a couple of new features for the iPod touch, namely Group FaceTime and augmented reality. They both work as expected. AR, in particular, works surprisingly well, given how taxing it is. While it still runs the latest software, the hardware has essentially been trapped in amber for over seven years.

Seven years ago, a 4-inch display on an iOS device was big news, with the fifth-gen touch joining the iPhone 5 in getting the new size at the same time. Now, it feels impossibly cramped to type on, leaving me wondering how any of us ever managed it all those years ago. Similarly, conveniences like biometric security or swipe gestures for navigation are incredibly annoying to go back from.

Typing in a passcode every single time I wanted to unlock the iPod touch got old really fast, and logging into services was a chore. It was a different era then, and the iPod touch was a flagship device with hardware nearly on par with the then-state-of-the-art iPhone 5.

He explains on a graph that you can tell today's average lifespan by looking at when cumulative sales equal the current total number of retired devices. And since Apple's cumulative sales reached million in the third quarter of , he estimates that the average lifespan between then and now is four years and three months.

Since Apple has only ever provided active device numbers in and , the average lifespan is still an estimate. It's not clear from the analysis how much the numbers are influenced by the lifespan of, say, Macs or iPads, which people typically don't replace as frequently as phones, but which Apple sells in far smaller quantities than the iPhone.

Apples' says for its own environmental impact reports it assumes first owners of macOS and tvOS devices keep them four years, while iOS and watchOS devices last for three years. Apple argues that most Apple products "last significantly longer" than that though, and are passed on, resold, or returned to Apple. Another interesting figure Dediu notes is that since January , Apple has sold million devices, which led to an increase in active devices of million during the period.

His analysis over time shows that roughly two-thirds of Apple devices sold are still being actively used, giving analysts one way to figure out how much Apple will earn in the future. Smartphone sales suffer first ever decline: Gartner. The fourth quarter of marks the first year-on-year decline in sales in the smartphone market.

I also have several iPod models 2 2nd gen nanos, 1 1st gen nano, 1 shuffle, 1 30 GB Classic, and a 3rd gen iPod Touch.

Since the Touch is only 1 day old I can't say how it will hold up, but all of my iPods are still working, although the 1st gen nano has horrible battery life at this point. All of them are at least 2 years old. Until earlier this year I also had a iPod Mini that was still working and it has been years since they made that model.
