Now you've experienced Kool Aid Hair Dye! Please use extreme caution! The permanence of the dye seems to vary on different types of hair. The color stayed bright and vibrant for us well over a month, and only really was gone once her hair grew out and we trimmed it. Be aware that this method might be permanent!

It did seem to transfer to towels after washing, but when dry, we didn't see any transfer to clothes or pillow cases or such. That being said, we did use an old pillowcase for her for a week or two, just to make sure. Please note that the dye stuck around quite a long time, and didn't fade for her like we thought it would.
She ended up trimming her hair to remove the colored ends. Why does it have to be unsweetened? I'm not sure what it is, but the pre-sweetened Kool-Aid does not adhere to the hair very well.
My assumption is that the pigments are diluted with the sweetner. The unsweetened packets are your best bet for this technique. This worked soooo well! I used the blue raspberry lemonade flavor for my light brown hair. I hope the color lasts the whole summer. What flavor should you use for purple? Or blue? Should you mix red and purple kool-aid for a nice purple? I'd use grape. That would give a nice deep purple color. If you want it lighter, I'd use blue raspberry and maybe pink lemonade. It would be more on the blue side, but still pretty!
Welcome to Chaotically Yours. Read more…. Prep Time 10 minutes. Active Time 30 minutes. Additional Time 15 minutes. Total Time 55 minutes. Difficulty Easy. Instructions To avoid staining, prepare the area of your home that you will be using for Kool Aid Hair Dye by laying old towels or some other covering on the floor. You are making dye, and it will stain surfaces, hands, clothes, and other items.
Use with care. To ensure the best results, make sure your hair has recently been washed. To avoid staining a good shirt, simply throw on an old one. If you are opting not to dye your whole head, put your hair up in a ponytail. If not, let your hair loose. Next pick how much of your hair you want to be dyed. In this case, I used inches, but you can do more or less.
Dip this amount of hair in the mixture and leave in for minutes depending on hair darkness. For lighter hair 15 minutes will do, but for brown to black hair minutes. The longer you leave your hair in the more likely it will be brighter and last longer.
The color should typically last weeks depending on how often you wash it. Style as you want and make your self an actually cup of Kool-Aid for your hard work. Leave it there for at least 30 minutes. This may seem like a long time, but it takes longer for color to appear on dark hair than on light-colored hair.
Rinse your hair with cold water. Once the time is up, pull your hair out of the dye. Gently squeeze out the excess dye, then rinse your hair under cold water.
Do not use warm water or shampoo, or the color will come out. Dry and style your hair. You can dry your hair with a hairdryer or you can let it air dry. Some of the Kool Aid may come off at first, so be careful!
Method 2. Understand what to expect. Dye is translucent, so it will mix with whatever color is underneath it. When used on top of black hair, dye appears much darker.
Lighter colors, such as yellow, may not be visible at all. If you want a bright, vibrant color, you might want to bleach your hair first. Be aware that while the Kool Aid won't be permanent, the bleach will. Cover your workspace and hands. Cover the counter or table you will be working on with some newspaper. A trash bag or a cheap, plastic, tablecloth will also do.
Put on an old shirt you won't mind staining, and a pair of plastic, disposable gloves. Consider covering the skin around your hairline with petroleum jelly.
This will help protect your skin against stains. Pour white conditioner into a container. You will need to use enough conditioner to completely cover and saturate your hair. This will make the dye easier to apply.
It will also deep-condition your hair. Stir in 4 to 5 packets of unsweetened Kool Aid. Keep stirring until the Kool Aid has dissolved, and the texture and color are consistent. You can use all one flavor, or combine flavors to create a unique color. If it is too thin, add more Kool Aid. Make sure that the Kool Aid you are using us unsweetened, otherwise your hair will get sticky. Apply the mixture to your hair. Work the mixture into your hair, starting from the roots.
If you want to, you can divide your hair into sections first. Make sure that you completely cover and saturate your hair with the mixture. Use a tinting brush for a more precise application. Tuck your hair under a plastic shower cap. This will keep your clothing and surroundings clean. It will also keep the dye damp and trap the heat from your head, which will make the dye more effective.
This will prevent the dye from staining the rest of your hair. Wait overnight for the dye to set. You can leave the dye on for several hours, but it would be better if you left it on overnight instead. Rinse the dye out with cool water.
Use the coldest temperature you can withstand, and avoid using warm water or shampoo. If you use warm water or shampoo, the color may come out. Not Helpful 17 Helpful My hair is brown, and the red Kool Aid I used did not work at all. It worked the last time, though. What do I do? Aria Halladay.
